MIT Technology Review documented the gig economy behind embodied robots: contractors in India, Nigeria, and Argentina recording intimate domestic scenes, often without knowing which robot company will train on them, and often with no published rule for how long the footage is kept. Why Physical AI Training Data Cannot Be Scraped
Every other branch of AI learned by reading the internet. Robots cannot. Data, not compute, is the real bottleneck for embodied AI, because a robot needs synchronized streams of action and sensor state that do not exist online. The only source is a human body doing a real task in a real room. That is why the footage of your ordinary afternoon is suddenly worth capturing.
Scarce inputs make markets. One industry analysis values physical AI and embodied robotics in the tens of billions of dollars and growing at more than thirty percent a year. The demonstrations at the center of it are also getting cheaper to collect: the Silicon Valley Robotics Center put the fully loaded cost at roughly 118 dollars an hour by March 2026, down about sixty-five percent in two years. Cheaper to collect means the human supplying it is worth less by the hour, even as the asset that human mints is worth more.

There is nothing fraudulent here. The work is real, the pay is real, and a flexible hourly gig is genuinely useful to a lot of people. But look at the shape of the trade. The asset keeps paying the firm for as long as robots keep learning from it.
